Museum of Deportation and Documentation Centre

The Museum of Deportation is structured in a way such as to recreate a symbolic journey in a Nazi work and extermination camp.
This to remember the story of the workers of Prato which were deported in the concentration camps of Mauthausen and Ebnesee in Austria and, with it, the lives of million of men an women, victims of raids that took place in every part of Europe, deported for political and racial reasons, according to the plan of enslavement and annihilation of entire peoples carried out by the III Reich during the Second World War.

The objects on display

Some exhibits, donated to the city by the Association of former deportees, are original, from the camps and factories in tunnels dug in the mountains of Ebensee by the prisoners. Others have been rebuilt on the initiative of the few survivors, after their return to Prato, they need to bear witness to the atrocities suffered in the concentration camps and the terrible conditions of work-slave.

In addition to having a definite value as a witness, the objects (displayed on stands as suggest "imbalance and instability") also have a symbolic meaning: the tell us that a seemingly insignificant object, such as a bowl, could mean survival or death.

The objects are described by didactics with quotations from the testimony of former deportees, along with photographs and commentary by movies streamed from 10 monitors located throughout the museum.
